Buying a Car Interstate? How to Transport it to Tasmania

If you are buying a car interstate, figuring out how to get it across the Bass Strait can seem daunting. Many Tasmanians find their dream vehicle on the mainland but hesitate because of the logistics. However, moving a vehicle to Tasmania is a straightforward process if you know the right steps.

Whether you purchased a classic car in Melbourne or a 4WD in Sydney, this guide explains exactly how to transport your new vehicle safely. Consequently, you can buy with confidence knowing Big Boy Towing can handle the final leg home.

Step 1: Buying a Car Interstate and the Ferry Process

You cannot drive to Tasmania. Your car must cross via ship. Specifically, when buying a car interstate, you have two main options for getting your newly purchased car across the water:

  • Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) Freight: Shipping companies load your car onto a cargo vessel in Melbourne and unload it in Devonport. This is usually the cheapest method for running cars.
  • The Spirit of Tasmania: You can fly to Melbourne, pick up the car yourself, and drive it onto the passenger ferry. While this sounds fun, flights, fuel, and ferry tickets often make it the more expensive option.

For the official freight requirements and sailing schedules, check the Spirit of Tasmania Freight Services page .

Step 2: Devonport to Hobart (The Final Mile)

Once your car arrives at the Devonport port, it needs to get to your driveway. If the car is unregistered (which is common when buying a car interstate), you cannot legally drive it down the Midlands Highway.

This is where we step in. Our Hobart to Launceston car transport  service regularly extends to the Devonport terminal. We can collect your car straight from the ship and deliver it directly to your door.

Handling Unregistered Vehicles When Buying a Car Interstate

Buying a car without local rego adds a layer of complexity. Therefore, you must be careful. If you try to drive it without a permit, you risk massive fines.

We solve this problem completely. As licensed operators, we use Trade Plates to legally move your vehicle. Check our guide on towing an unregistered vehicle in Tasmania  to understand how we keep your new purchase fully insured and legal during transit.
